Background Information:

The audio interviews recorded originally on cassette tapes are part of the Center for Southwest Research Anselmo Arellano collection. The interviews, conducted mostly by Anselmo Arellano, were of regional community elders - a relationship formed through extended kinship and cultural ties. The intentions of the interviewer and the participants were to document and transfer community knowledge and local and family history for educational purposes and also to preserve Nuevomexicano culture and spoken Spanish language. Most of the interviews were part of Arellano's research on the history/culture of the Las Vegas, New Mexico area. (See also the Spanish Language Video Interviews series from his collection.)

Original cassette tapes were digitized by Judy Garcia and uploaded onto UNM Digital Repository by CSWR Archivist, Samuel Sisneros and CRS graduate fellow, Maria Feliza Monta.

New Mexico Spanish Language Archival Recovery Project:

The Anselmo Arellano collection's Spanish language oral History interviews series is one of the ethnographic oral history collections archived at the Center for Southwest Research (CSWR) that are part of the New Mexico Spanish Language Archival Recovery Project. Initiated in 2025 by archivist Samuel Sisneros and Center for Regional Studies graduate fellow, Feliza Monta Jameson, the objective of the project is to consolidate and coordinate CSWR archival collections containing interviews of native New Mexico Spanish speakers. The project involves recovering, regenerating, preserving and extending the ethnographic studies done by earlier investigators, researchers and producers. By using current digital and online technologies, this project intends to bridge the accessibility gap between their work (1960s-1990s) and the present.
