Manuel was a fletero [Freight man], farming in the area, cuento de Vicente Silva. Cutting and packing hey [sacate] to sell in Las Vegas until the Government started to spray the lands [beginning of land grants]. He had a little tiendita [grocery shop]. People were respectful in the community [La Merced de Mora]. When the Americans started to come, they fenced the land and cut the pass to the Hispanic local people. According to the treaty Mexicanos [New Mexican] got their lands free of paying taxes and were not allowed to sell the lands to other but new mexican and their descents, but some locals did not respect that regulation and started to sell their lands to the Americanos.
