Abstract

The study of the use of the subjunctive in the Poema de Mio Cid is more complex than might be anticipated at the outset. As it is true in most languages, the subjunctive was used much more widely in the writing of such an early date than in modern Spanish. Many of the constructions employed in the poem are common in the language of today, but some have passed from current usage. Some of the interesting aspects of the problem are the use of the -ra form, the great frequency of the use of the future subjunctive, the use of the present subjunctive after si when it may be translated as if, and the combinations of tenses used in relation to each other in independent and dependent clauses.
