Abstract
La ciudad frontera examines how twentieth- and twenty-first-century Spanish and Catalan works represent immigrants, arguing that these representations reflect broader tensions around identity, diversity, and belonging. Focusing on Barcelona—a global metropolis, tourist hub, and neoliberal center—the dissertation positions the city as a key site to explore how urban environments negotiate migration, nationalism, and ecological strain.
In this dissertation, I contend that contemporary representations of immigrants, traced through close readings of written and audiovisual narratives, build on historical dynamics originating in the postwar Francoist period, when migration from other Peninsular regions reshaped the city. By foregrounding this socio-historical context, the dissertation argues that Barcelona’s response to diversity—and the limitations of the Spanish and Catalan national projects—illuminate the city's present-day struggles with spatial and environmental justice in the global era.
RESUMEN
La ciudad-frontera examina cómo la literatura y el cine en catalán y español han representado la inmigración. Se defiende que esta representación refleja tensiones más grandes sobre identidad, diversidad y pertenencia. Centrada en la ciudad de Barcelona, la disertación posiciona la ciudad condal como un lugar privilegiado para explorar cómo los ambientes urbanos interactúan con la inmigración, el nacionalismo y la crisis medioambiental.
A través del análisis textual y cinematográfico, y gracias a un marco teórico interdisciplinar que incluye los estudios urbanos, los estudios de la raza y las humanidades ambientales, La ciudad-frontera defiende que las representaciones contemporáneas de la inmigración se construyen a raíz de dinámicas históricas que tienen sus orígenes en la época franquista, cuando la inmigración desde otras regiones de la Península cambió radicalmente la ciudad. Poniendo en primer plano este contexto socio histórico, esta investigación reafirma que la respuesta de Barcelona a la diversidad—y los límites de los proyectos nacionales catalán y español—arrojan nueva luz sobre los desafíos que la ciudad del siglo XXI tiene que enfrentar en términos de justicia espacial y ambiental en una sociedad globalizada.
