Abstract
It is the primary purpose of this study to examine the part played by the “nego” and “gente de côr as an influence and subject in the friction of Jorge Amado. To do this one must first understand the social and cultural role of the colored element in contemporary Brazil. National as well as foreign sociologists and anthropologists have methodologically researched this area. Their conclusions provide a helpful and necessary perspective for this study. This blended socio-literary approach will provide, not necessarily a revolutionary view, but, hopefully, a more profound understanding of the works of Brazil’s greatest fiction writer Jorge Amado and at the same time will promote a better understanding of the colored person in Brazilian society.
