Abstract
A collection of short stories joined together by a surrounding narrative or framework is recognized as a very ancient type of fiction. Present in the traditional writings of the Orient and accepted by the earliest writers of the Western world, the framework device achieved a popularity during the Renaissance that has never completely disappeared even in modern times.
