Abstract

In this short story, Victoria, a 75 year old abuelita from San Antonio, Tx, is visited by the Lechuza one summer night to warn Victoria about the impending doom awaiting her family. With the help of her teenage granddaughter Isabel, together Victoria and Isabel embark on a journey to save the fate of Victoria’s family from COVID. Their adventures include the help of some other famous South Texas leyenda characters, the Llorona and the Chupacabre. This creative work of fiction is the starting point for a longer piece where the author, a Chicana feminist from South Texas, attempts to make meaning from her attendance at the memorial of the migrant tragedy in San Antonio and the memorial in Uvalde, Tx. This creative writing piece serves as a healing practice for the author, a space where she can reimagine a world where Chicanas and South Texas folklore come together to save and honor the loss of innocent lives.
