Abstract

Introduction

The University of New Mexico College of Nursing (CON) and College of Education and Human Sciences (COEHS) faculty collaborated to develop and pilot an interprofessional education activity, which met the dietetic internship competency related to placement of nasogastric (NG) feeding tube and CON clinical objectives.

Methods

Fourteen upper level CON students and seven dietetic interns participated in the interactive IPE activity. CON students developed and delivered a presentation on indications for enteral feeding and the step-by-step procedure for NG tube placement. Nursing students demonstrated the procedure using simulation mannequins, and dietetic interns practiced the NG tube placement procedure. Students worked together to program the feeding pump. Dietetic interns developed and delivered presentations on the roles and responsibilities of the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist to nursing students. Nutrition indications, feeding protocols, EMR documentation, and disease-specific formulations were included. Formative assessment of Miller’s pyramid of clinical competence was used throughout the IPE activity.

Results

Student feedback indicated that the IPE activity increased knowledge and understanding of how they can improve collaboration in the clinical setting as students and new graduates. They had an appreciation of the overlap in professional roles and responsibilities, but were also able to identify unique roles that each profession contributes to patient care. Students indicated that they would like to participate in other IPE activities where they continue learning from each other.

Conclusions

The IPE activity was successful in meeting competencies and CON clinical objectives. We will continue to refine the IPE activity and incorporate other healthcare professions.
