Abstract
This investigation was a case study for the purpose of comparing the science education program for prospective secondary teachers at The University of New Mexico with selected guidelines established by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education and Certification (NASDTEC) and published by the AAAS in a 1971 pamphlet entitled Guidelines and Standards for the Education of Secondary School Teachers of Science and Mathematics. The guidelines dealt with student competencies in 1) understanding of science, 2) the processes of science, 3) the history of science, 4) the metric system, 5) algebra, 6) trigonometry, 7) selected science disciplines, 8) the number of semester hours in science, and 9) the number of semester hours in mathematics.
