Abstract
The primary purpose of this study was to field test an application of Iannaccone's political linkage typology. Iannaccone conceptualized a state’s educational political linkage pattern by formulating a typology of educationalpolitical processes. The fourfold typology includes the following: (1) Type I, Locally-based disparate, (2) Type II, State-wide monolithic, (3) Type III, State-wide fragmented, and (4) Type IV, State-wide syndical. Identifying New Mexico as a Type I, Locally-based disparate state, structural correlates were examined testing the general question, "Do interpersonal manipulative tendencies of political actors and/or longevity in the role influence the distribution of certain additional state educational funds?" Utilizing the three variables: (1) interpersonal manipulation, (2) longevity, and (3) additional state educational funding, the study examined two populations--public school superintendents and publicly elected legislators--for a single state. None of the hypothesized relationships was found to be statistically significant (p< 0.05). Directionality at the 0.10 level was observed when comparing receipt or non-receipt of additional state monies between legislators with high or low longevity. Future researchers electing to pursue Iannaccone's linkage typology are advised to scrutinize the Type I structural correlate of localism. An alternative approach might be through a regional or legislative subdivision analysis. The future researcher may need to extend the study to include other variables associated with political actors, such as the amount of education and the length of time in the particular role or the immediate region. Finally, the future researcher may need to select a population which could be sampled in total through a different data gathering technique.
