Abstract
I. THE PROBLEM
Statement of the problem. There is no controversy over the importance of reading instruction in the modern school curriculum. The ability to read is essential for learning in every field of knowledge. The purpose of this study was to investigate how individual differences could be more effectively provided for in the middle grades by (1) determining an indication of pupil interest, mental maturity, and reading achievement among three fourth grade classrooms, (2) establishing a method of procedure by which individualized instruction could be executed without utilization of the traditional basal reading approach, and (3) making an analytical comparison through diagnostic measurement of the achievement of pupils working with both the individualized reading program and the basal reading program.
