Abstract
The physical fitness of the youth of the United States has been widely deplored in recent years. Kraus and Hirschland conducted a study which involved a comparison of the physical fitness of European children with the physical fitness of American children. Their study showed that 57.9% of the Americans tested failed the test as compared to only 8.7% of the Europeans. This discovery was one of the factors which prompted the creation of the President’s Council on Youth Fitness on September 6, 1956.
