Port of Manaus. Despite its size the Northern region is sparsely settled and its population was estimated to be 7.7 million in 1986 (less than 6% of the total population). A large part of the population lives in cities such as Belém (PA, 1,200,000) or Manaus (AM, 635,000) which are the largest in the region, or along the major rivers.Porto de Manaus. Apesar do grande tamanho da região Norte, os povoados estão bastante dispersos e sua população em 1986 foi estimada em 7,7 milhões de habitantes, menos de 6% do total da população brasileira. A maior parte desta população vive em cidades como Belém (PA, 1.200.000) ou Manaus (AM, 635.000), que são as maiores da região, ou ao longo dos maiores rios.
