Description

One of the better stretches of the nearly 2,500 km Transamazónica highway. Various major highways were built to link the region with the rest of the country such as the Belém-Brasília (2,100 km) and the Cuiabá-Porto Velho-Rio Branco (1900 km)Manaus (2300 km) highways. Intra-regional transportation and integration was the objective of the Transamazónica highway. With the exception of a few sections, it is largely unpaved, unused and unsettled, despite the government's ambitious plan to establish numerous landless families along its approximately 2,500 kilometers. Traffic on the other highways has increased tremendously and has been an important source of local development and population growth.
