Abstract
The Spanish refrán was born in the springtime of the Spanish language and culture from familiar and common expressions, which have a peculiar element of folklore common to all people. It has spread wherever the spoken languages in Spanish.
The riddle as well as the refrán is the folklore fossil of all languages. It sprang from man's earliest conceptions and observations of nature. He concentrated all his observations in the form of a question from which sprang the riddle.
