Abstract

The purpose of this study, then, is to show how two authors, Benito Pérez Galdós of Spain and Eçadde Queiroz of Portugal, contributed to the liberal movement by expressing their ideas against the church dogma and tradition. It must be emphasized, however that never did Eça or Galdós attack the Church outright, but rather its practices. These were the authors' ways of expressing disapproval of certain religious practices of some of its narrow minded members. Moreover, we are not only interested in how these two writers handled what to them were religious problems, but also in the similar manner in which they presented them.
