Abstract
Dámaso Alonso is one of the most important literary critics in contemporary Spain. He is less well known as a poet. Critics usually include him in the so-called "Generation of 1927, 11 although there are many differences between his work and that of Lorca, Guillén, Salinas, Alberti, Aleixandre, Cernuda and Diego. Many critics misunderstand the techniques and goals of Alonso's early poetry for the same reasons that they misunderstand the goals of the "Generation of 1927." This poetry is considered "pure," "dehumanized" and "lacking in content" in comparison to the "human, 11 flsocial11 nature of postwar poetry. A large percentage of the criticism devoted to Alonso's poetry subscribes to this general interpretation.
