Abstract
Throughout the history of Guatemala, poetry has been a constant outlet for the spirit of the land. Guatemalan writers share the Latin Americans' inclination toward expression in verse which has been called the "enfermedad latinoamericana." Rare is the educated Guatemalan who at least in his youth has not contributed his quota of verse. Guatemalan poetic proclivity is the more apparent when one considers that the poetry of that land has been produced by only a small part of the population since the non-contributing indigenous peoples form the majority of the three million inhabitants.
