Abstract
The thesis begins with a curriculum analysis clarifying assumptions dealing with children, learning, teaching method and knowledge. This is followed by a distinct statement of educational goals and philosophy, an evaluation guide and a general description of the lives of children in the curriculum analyzed. From general educational philosophy the thesis proceeds to music philosophy and its role in education. The elements of music, teaching listening, listening's role in the entire music curriculum and the psychology of listening is discussed concluding with a description of the index and how to best use it in the classroom. The index itself is divided into two sections. The first section is the musical concept listing of elements and sub-elements of music such as tempo, rhythm, melody, harmony, form, names of instruments and stylistic techniques. Numbers under each concept heading refer to the second section of the index, the index of music listening examples from all historical periods including contemporary music. The musical examples clearly illustrate the concept to which they correspond. Although popular and ethnic music are not represented, sources are included in the appendix. Two listening lesson examples are also given in the appendix.
