To create an accordion book with tabs that function as hinges for attaching additional accordion sections or covers, allowing the book to become longer, wider, and more sculptural: The instructor begins by checking the paper grain and reviewing mountain and valley folds before measuring and scoring one-inch tabs at the edges of the paper. Using a metal ruler and bone folder, the tabs are carefully scored and folded while maintaining accurate alignment, and the remainder of the paper is folded using the standard accordion-folding technique. The completed tabs can then overlap with another accordion section and be attached using bookbinding adhesive, PVA, or an appropriate glue stick, creating a clean hinge between the sections. The end tabs can also be used to attach covers. This method allows multiple accordion sections to be joined together, making it possible to create books of different lengths, configurations, and sculptural forms.
