How to create a Noble-style Japanese side-sewn stab book using three sewing stations and an exposed decorative spine? The instructor begins by stacking individual sheets between two covers and uses a jig to accurately position and punch the three sewing holes with an awl. The thread is measured according to the number of sewing stations, waxed, and threaded through a needle before sewing begins. The instructor then demonstrates the sewing pattern by passing the thread through the three stations and repeatedly wrapping it around the spine, head, and tail of the book. Proper tension is emphasized so that the binding remains secure without crimping or damaging the spine. Finally, the thread is secured with a square knot and can either be trimmed or decorated with a bead. The finished book has a simple but decorative exposed binding that securely holds the individual pages together.
