Description
As librarians, we frequently encounter challenges with classification systems such as Dewey Decimal because they do not always meet the specific needs of our collections, spaces, and patrons. This presentation will delve into creating customized classification schemes for public, school, and special libraries to organize materials better and streamline staff and patron use. I will provide examples of various tools, strategies, and methods for altering or replacing traditional classification systems. Additionally, rationales for creating your own classification scheme and the pros and cons of doing so will be explored. UNM’s Center for Development and Disability special library will be used as a case study.
