Abstract
A deficits model is the cornerstone for the health professions education, practice and scholarship. With a focus on diseases, deficits, addictions, social risk factors, this approach has a risk of disempowering patients, communities, and learners. A strength-based approach instead focuses on what people and communities do well – resources, skills, strengths, resilience, etc. – with intention of building upon these to improve health. Strength-based approaches are critical for decolonization and for undoing racism. This session, led by HSC students, presents a mixture of data and personal experience to elucidate the importance of strength-based approaches to health, with guidance on how to move our HSC closer to this reality.
