Abstract
In this introductory chapter, the Lautaro Lodge is presented as a significant precedent in politico-military relations, a precedent never to be forgotten by future officers'corps. Other nineteenth century military lodges are briefly described to show that political life in Argentina has always been shared by civilian and military alike. The old armies of gaucho militia led by caudillo generals were an instrument of local and national political power. After the battle of Monte Caseros, in 1852, the national army was recreated, made stronger by military reforms, and used effectively to eliminate caudillism, anarchy, separatism, and to establish the definite unification of the country.
