Abstract
The great Pacific Northwest was a region of vast forests, snowcapped mountains, and swift-flowing rivers. The history of this area is a story of international rivalry. From time to time five nations had pretensions to the rich Oregon Territory—Spain, Great Britain, Russia, France, and the United States.
