Abstract
The expedition of Pánfilo de Narváez to Mexico in the spring of 1520 constitutes one of the most important episodes in the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Confederacy. The coming of Narváez represented a serious challenge to the de facto authority of Hernán Cortés as leader of the conquest enterprise, and had an indirect, if not direct, relationship to the enforced-retreat (La Noche Triste) of the Spaniards from the Aztec capital several weeks later. Consequently the sequence of events subsequent to the arrival of Narváez and the motives which prompted them merit careful investigation and analysis.
