Abstract
Since the Italian Renaissance, scholars have been enamored of the past. The past being, for most of them, "the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome.” The Renaissance, the period of the great rebirth of classical literary knowledge, and later European history were studied; but the interregnum between the decay and all of the ancient world and the rebirth of classical knowledge was largely neglected. This period of almost ten centuries was looked upon as a time of regress instead of progress - an epoch of ignorance and superstitution.
