Abstract
The history which unfolds in the following chapters encompasses the active political years in the life of Holm Olaf Bursum. Bursum was born at Fort Dodge, Iowa, on February 10, 1867. His parents Frank O. and Maria (Hilton) Bursum, were natives of Norway. At the close of the American Civil War they immigrated to Prairie du Chien where they prospered and were blessed with two children, Louise and Holm. Tragedy befell the family when the father died at the age of twenty-three. The widowed mother remarried and moved with her young family to Colorado where it was hoped that the mountain climate would bring her happiness and health; however, the new environment failed to restore her health, and as a result, Holm found himself an orphan at the age of twelve.
