Abstract
Among those humanists of the sixteenth century whose literary output reflects an awareness of the need for clearly defined method in the writing of history is the Spanish-born scholar, Juan Luis Vives. Although he achieved his fame largely in the field of social reform, education, and psychology, Vives had much to say on the value and method of history. A good deal has been written on many aspects of Vives' thought, but virtually no attention has been given to his ideas on history. Only his most extensive biographer, Bonilla y San Martin, makes a serious effort to separate from the multitude of Vives' works, and his theories on history
