Abstract
Washington Ellsworth Lindsey exemplified the spirit of a pioneering and progressive family. The third governor of the state of New Mexico was born on December 20, 1862, near Armstrong Mills in Belmont County, Ohio. His great grandfather, Robert Lindsey, was the founder of the family in America. Emigrating from Scotland before the American Revolution, this Scotsman settled first in New England, and later he moved to Maryland and then to Virginia. Early in the revolution he enlisted, from Maryland, for the cause of American freedom. He became a horseshoer in the army of Washington and before the end of the war Lindsey was one of those who took care of the General's horses.
