Background Information:
These audio interviews are part of the CSWR María Dolores Gonzales collection. Maria Dolores Gonzales' work and recordings contribute to this project uniquely because it offers a multi-generational perspective involving female family members interviewing each other and candid conversations with other family and community members. These recordings capture what Dr. Gonzales calls – “community carilla or carría (A Dictionary of New Mexico and Southern Colorado Spanish, Rubén Cobos, 193, pg. 29) meaning roasting or making fun of in a friendly manner and pláticas meaning conversations - both activities representing the essence of traditional community and family relationships and communication.
Original cassette tapes were digitized and uploaded in MP3 format onto UNM Digital Repository by CSWR Archivist, Samuel Sisneros.

New Mexico Spanish Language Archival Recovery Project:
The María Dolores Gonzales collection (MSS 1154): audio Interviews is one of the ethnographic oral history collections archived at the Center for Southwest Research (CSWR) that are part of the New Mexico Spanish Language Archival Recovery Project. Initiated in 2025 by archivist Samuel Sisneros and Center for Regional Studies fellow Feliza Monta Jameson with the assistance of UNM Libraries’ Digital Initiatives and Scholarly Communication department, the objective of the project is to consolidate and coordinate CSWR archival collections containing interviews of native New Mexico Spanish speakers. The project involves recovering, regenerating, preserving and extending the ethnographic studies done by earlier investigators, researchers and producers. By using current digital and online technologies, this project intends to bridge the accessibility gap between their work (1960s-1990s) and the present.
