Abstract
This dissertation is a study of the religious symbolism of four of Gald6s' novels. Three of these novels have been chosen from the last decade of the nineteenth century, the so-called spiritualistic period when Russian mysticism was making its influence felt in Spanish literary circles. The fourth novel is taken from an early period in his writing career.
The purpose of this study is two-fold: to study the complex symbolism of these novels, and to show that the religious symbolism, characteristic of the novels written during the spiritualistic period is already clearly evident in at least one of Gald6s1 early novels, Zaragoza. This characteristic, consequently, cannot be traced back to the influence of the Russian spiritual writers. Gald6s was, therefore, basically sincere when he denied the influence of these writers in the composition of his spiritualist novels.
