Abstract
It is the intent of this paper to demonstrate and prove Henrik Ibsen’s use of a constantly repeating key word or phrase as an essential structural device in his mature drama. This key word or phrase constitutes an architectonic device on which the whole play is constructed, around which it revolves, and to which it returns. The word or phrase which shall be shown to be the keystone of each of Ibsen’s mature dramas may be defined as being, first, an expression which is repeated over and over again; second, this expression is one which normally reappears at the climax of the action.
