Abstract
Civilizations differ and change, but human characteristics do not. Because certain kinds of people and certain kinds of personality traits are common to mankind, types develop in literature. These types, or stock characters, can be seen appearing and reappearing in literature, especially in the drama and in the novel. It is upon one of these recognizable stock characters that this thesis will concentrate.
