Abstract
There is a familiar America: an America that is commemorated in patriotic speeches, in high school debates and Horatio Alger stories, a country that, in the 1960’s, is the richest and most powerful nation in the world, a country that has 170 million radios, 71 million automobiles, 1,763 daily newspapers, more than 55 million television sets, and which has been described as “affluent” and “abundant.”
