Abstract
Textbooks have been highly influential in developing the instructional program in American schools. Next to the teacher, textbooks have had a more significant part in determining what has been taught and how it has been taught than any other single influence (Maxwell, 1921, p.1; Tidwell, 1928, p.1; N.E.A., 1962, p.23; Carpenter, 1963, p.278). Textbooks reflect the trend of current educational thought; therefore, the development of a broad picture of textbook use in New Mexico should provide a better understanding of instructional programs both in pioneer-day and present-day schools systems. A study of textbooks should also provide information about the general progress of education in New Mexico.
