Abstract
Statement of the Problem
Two readers, Dias de Sol and Cielo Azul, were prepared in a research program at the University of New Mexico under the direction of Dr. Dolores Gonzales. The readers were designed to utilize those cultural behaviors of the Mexican-American of northern New Mexico.
This study was designed to find: (1) whether the stories in the readers did, in fact, contain cultural elements common to the people of northern New Mexico, and
(2) whether first-graders and second-graders understood the culture, could verbalize it in Spanish, and could then lift the discussion to the level of their own experience.
