Abstract
Problem and significance. A conservative estimate shows that there are approximately 121,000 elementary school pupils regularly viewing educational television in New Mexico. Of this number, 66,000 are “enrolled” in science, 7,000 in Spanish, and 48,000 in music. For the KNME-TV program, Music 6, there are an estimated 15,000 sixth-grade students enrolled. For a state with a population of approximately 1,100,000, these are rather impressive figures---particularly since educational television has gained prominence only in the last decade. Researchers attempted to evaluate the effectiveness of this medium have produced hundreds of reports showing “no significant difference” between educational television and ordinary classroom instruction. Perhaps, as one educator suggested, “It would be a mistake to interpret the ‘no significant difference’ findings as either a validation or a condemnation of certain technologies applied to classroom instruction. Rather, the findings may indicate that the research has been guided by wrong questions.” (Barnes, 1964, p. 3).
