Abstract
This research will survey the status of facilities, equipment, and course offerings now available for the teaching of music in New Mexico high schools with enrollments up to one thousand. The survey includes six phases: (1) presentation and analysis of ideal standards for music instruction as proposed in professional literature; (2) presentation and analysis of minimum essential standards for music instruction as proposed by a panel of experts in the field of music education; (3) presentation and analysis of general recommendations and standards proposed by the Music Educators National Conference and restated by the New Mexico Department of Education; (4) presentation and analysis of statistics revealing status of high-school music instruction in the state with respect to facilities, equipment, and course offerings; (5) comparison of this status with the various standards and recommendations based upon the results of the comparison; (6) presentation of conclusions and recommendations based upon the results of the comparison.
