Abstract

This dissertation examines two schools of thought concerning the question of economic development. The orthodox view of development is compared with that of the evolutionary economists' paradigm with respect to philosophical foundations, theoretical structure, and empirical evidence. More specifically, the purpose of this dissertation is: (1) to provide an overview of the basic principles underlying each school's conception of the development process; (2) to restate the fundamental hypotheses concerning development that are held by the two contending schools; and (3) to analyze the validity of the two theories by examining the available historical evidence of the developmental process as it has occurred in several nations, including Iran.
