Abstract
This paper introduces identifier-based discovery mechanisms in large-scale networks and presents a taxonomy of discovery schemes and proposals based on their business model. The paper poses several questions that are becoming increasingly important as we proceed to design the inter-network of the future. We first define and motivate a multi-level discovery problem that accounts for discovery service differentiation and we present an architecture that provides differentiated services. We then proceed to present an economic framework that accounts for the cost of discovery and for the players' valuations and to discuss the inherent challenges.
