Abstract
This dissertation presents a method for designing near-time-optimal feedback controllers of time-invariant linear normal systems in which the system matrix is negative definite and the control input is a bounded scalar function.
The basic design approach is to systematically construct a sequence of multiplane (piecewise linear) suboptimal switching surfaces which converges to the optimal switching surface and to test the quality of the suboptimal switching surface constructed in each iteration until one which satisfies the relative (optimal/suboptimal) performance criterion given a priori is obtained.
