Abstract
It was the purpose of this investigation to determine some of the effects a pozzolan has on Portland cement concrete when New Mexico aggregates are used. The specific items investigated were (1) to determine the effects of a pozzolan on the alkali aggregate expansion in concrete; (2) to show the effect on the compressive strength of concrete and the tensile strength of mortar briquettes when part of the Portland cement is replaced with a pozzolan; (3) to determine whether or not the “Mason Jar Expansion Test” would give reliable results; and (4) to determine whether or not an aggregate, with an alkali reactivity of one or more, should be considered deleterious. In the investigation, four different New Mexico aggregates and two pozzolans were used.
