View of the Bafa de Todos os Santos and the Cidade Baixa (Lower City) from the Praça Municipal. In the background is the Sao Marcelo Fort, in the center the former port now reserved for smaller leisure boats and saveiros (a name given to boats used for fishing or to transport passengers and merchandise), and on the right the Lacerda Elevator. Salvador was founded on a large hill which overlooks the bay. To the present day, the port and the lower commercial area is still referred to as the Cidade Baixa while its counterpart is called the Cidade Alta (Upper City) in reference to the elevated areas where the city was first founded.Vista da Baía de Todos os Santos e da Cidade Baixa, a partir da Praça Municipal. Ao fundo está o Forte de São Marcelo, ao centro o antigo Porto, hoje reservado para pequenos barcos de lazer e saveiros (nome dado a barcos usados para pescarias ou para transporte de passageiros e mercadoria), e, à direita, o Elevador Lacerda. Salvador foi fundada sobre um grande monte com vista para a baía. Nos dias de hoje,o porto e a área comercial baixa são ainda denominados Cidade Baixa, enquanto sua outra parte é chamada Cidade Alta, com referência às áreas elevadas, onde a cidade foi fundada.
