Description

23) Coffee plantation in southern Minas Gerais. Southeastern Brazil's terra roxa (red earth), derived from the weathering of diabase or basic igneous rock proved ideal for coffee because of its porosity and mineral content. Coffee was initially planted in Rio de Janeiro and southern Minas Gerais, especially in the Paraiba river valley between Rio and São Paulo and depended on slave labor. Later when the slavery economy went into crisis in the mid-Nineteenth century, planters encouraged European and Japanese immigration. The state of São Paulo soon became the major coffee producer, yet the port of Rio de Janeiro also flourished from the coffee boom. Coffee remained the mainstay of the Brazilian economy until the early 1960s.23) Plantação de café no sul de Minas Gerais.
