Description
49. Retirantes (Migrants), 1944. The poverty and misery of the backlanders is evident in their ragged, famished state, and the swollen belly of the child at right. Forced by cyclical droughts to leave their homes and cross the arid plains in search of relief, the image of families of migrants carrying all their meager belongings on their heads and in their hands is a familiar one.
