Description
Manioc plantation on a small farm in the agreste near Feira de Santana (BA). Manioc Hour remains one of the staple foods of lower income Brazilians in addition to rice and beans, which are planted in large quantities in this subregion. The agreste is characterized by a variety of slopes and tabuleiros (plateau surfaces), the most extensive being the Planalto da Borborema, which are part of the Northeastero Brazilian Highlands. This subregion is a thin transitional climatic and vegetational zone between the zona da mata and the sertão, not more than 180 km wide. Its climate is less humid than the coast and in some of the more western areas there is little rainfall, though at more regular intervals than in the sertão. Agricutural activities in this subregion include cattle ranching and the cultivation of numerous subsistence crops, especially manioc, cotton, coro, and beans. These crops are produced primarily for local markets, though tobacco and other export crops may also be cultivated on small family plots.Plantação de mandioca em uma pequena fazenda no agreste, perto de Feira de Santana (BA). A farinha de mandioca, junto com o arroz e o feijão, continua sendo uma das comidas básicas dos brasileiros, os quais são plantados em grande quantidade nesta sub-região. O agreste é caracterizado por uma variedade de escarpas e tabuleiros (planaltos cuja superfície é nivelada) que formam o planalto Nordestino, sendo o planalto da Borborema o de maior extensão. Esta sub-região é uma estreita zona de transição climática e vegetativa entre a zona da mata e o sertão, não tendo mais de 180 km de largura. O clima é menos úmido que o do litoral. Em algumas áreas mais ao leste, as chuvas são poucas, porém, mais regulares que no sertão. Existem muitas atividades agrícolas nesta sub-região, especialmente a criação de gado e o cultivo da mandioca, do algodão, do milho e do feijão. Além destes quatro produtos, que são comercializados nos mercados regionais, o tabaco e outros produtos de exportação também são cultivados nas pequenas propriedades.
