Rubber tree. The sudden international demand for rubber beginning in the 1870s generated a great interest in the region. Large numbers of (people from northeastern Brazil) flocked to the Amazon Basin in search of new economic opportunities. The rubber boom concentrated around the city of Manaus which witnessed tremendous growth, yet by 1920 competition from Asian rubber plantations abruptly ended this lucrative economic activity and the region's economy entered a long decline.Seringueira. A súbita demanda internacional pela borracha, que teve início na década de 70 do século passado, gerou um grande interesse pela região. Um grande número de nordestinos afluíram para a bacia Amazónica em busca de novas oportunidades económicas. O "boom" do ciclo da borracha se concentrou ao redor da cidade de Manaus, que teve um enorme crescimento, decaíndo porém bruscamente em 1920 com a concorrência das plantações de borracha da Ásia, terminando com a atividade de economia lucrativa da região e entrando sua economia entrou em longo declínio.
