View of several apartment buildings, the statue of Cristo Redentor(touristic symbol of Rio), and the Pavão favela in Rio de Janeiro. The favelas have existed since the early part of this century, and Rio was among the first cities to have larger shantytown settlements. It was not uncommon for favelas to appear behind the luxury beachfront apartments on the neighboring hills and elevations.Vista de vários prédios de apartamentos, a estátua do Cristo Redentor (símbolo turístico do Rio), e a favela do Pavão no Rio de Janeiro. As favelas têm existido desde o início desse século, e naquela ocasião o Rio já se encontravam entre as primeiras cidades a terem as maiores cidades de barracos. Era comum as favelas aparecerem atrás de luxuosos apartamentos de praia nas colinas e elevações vizinhas.
