Description

Zebu (a Brahma subspecies imported from India during the colonial period and interbreeded) caule herd being tended by a cowboy (vaqueiro) at sunset near Milagres (BA). ln order to supply the coastal sugar estates, urban centers and later, mining regions with meat, leather, beasts of burden and other foodstuffs, large ranches were established in the sertão during the colonial period. The demand for these products and the ease with which a ranch could be established enabled the vast hinterlands to be settled.Rebanho de gado zebu pastoreado por um vaqueiro ao pór-do-sol perto de Milagres (BA). A fim de suprir os estados litorâneos do açúcar com carne, couro, animais, bestas de carga e outros produtos alimentícios, nos centros urbanos, e mais tarde nas regiões de mineração, foram estabelecidas grandes fazendas durante o período colonial. A necessidade destes produtos e a facilidade com que uma fazenda podia ser estabelecida, permitiu que o vasto sertão fosse colonizado.
